Practice Scenario 2: Betty Betty is the first Peer Specialist to be hired at a clinic, which provides medication management and therapy. She received treatment there three years ago, but she has not used clinic services since then. The Clinical Director is skeptical about the value of peer services. She wants to make sure hiring a Peer Specialist won’t end up creating a lot of extra work for everyone else on the team before hiring others. Other members of the clinical staff are having a hard time accepting Betty as a colleague. They fear Betty may relapse or be too “fragile” to handle the stress of the job. As Betty’s supervisor, what would you do?- Create a new post with your response to "As the supervisor, I would..." (taking into account what you learned from the course faculty)
- Review at least 3 postings from others in the class
- Respond to at least 1 posting from someone else in the class with additional thoughts about the posting.

Given the reluctance on the part of the Clinical Director and her staff, I wonder if it would be worthwhile to locate a program where there is a thriving peer support program and ask them to come and share some of their successes. While it is challenging to get people to take time away for a 'field trip' this could ultimately show how a peer specialist program can offer hope - not just to the people who are being served, but to the clinical staff as well.
