Practice Scenario 3: Charlie
Charlie is a Peer Specialist at the local Recovery Center, a peer-run program that helps people to discover (or rediscover) the kinds of things they like to do in the community with a focus on vocational recovery. Charlie loves what he does and spends a lot of his time out in the community working directly with the people he supports. Rather than start his day at the Center, he often goes directly to meet people where they are in the community and it is not unusual for several days to go by before he comes in to the Center. One day, you hear a troubling report from a woman Charlie has been working with in the community. She said he seemed angry about something and stormed away from a class he had dropped her off to attend. He left her there without a ride home or any further explanation. The next morning, Charlie shows up for work as if nothing has happened. As Charlie’s supervisor, what would you do?
- Create a new post with your response to "As the supervisor, I would..." (taking into account what you learned from the course faculty)
- Review at least 3 postings from others in the class
- Respond to at least 1 posting from someone else in the class with additional thoughts about the posting.

I would start by assuming nothing. Even though there was a complaint, I don't know whether her complaint was valid. People say all kinds of things for all kinds of reasons. She might have been looking for a ride -- or something more -- and Charlie just said "no," so she made something up to get him in trouble. I would wait for Charlie bring up what happened when we met for supervision. If he doesn't bring it up, I would ask what he knows about the complaint. If he gives an explanation, I would let him know he has my support and we would work together on the most appropriate way to address the woman's concern.
