Introduction to Supervising Peer Specialists (Situations and Solutions) Practice Scenario 1: Abby
If you haven't read and agreed to the Forum Guidelines yet, click here.
Abby is a full-time Peer Specialist at a Personalized Recovery Oriented Services (PROS) program. You were hired to replace the previous supervisor, who died suddenly. In getting to know the six staff members, you learn Abby was hired three years ago and has been there the longest. She seems friendly but frazzled. You watch her for a day and many of the tasks don’t seem to be related to peer support, things like fixing computers and ordering office supplies, organizing files, answering the phone, and driving people different places because transportation is hard to afford. Abby’s job description reads as follows: The Peer Specialist ensures the provision of peer services to individuals with a recovery focus. The Peer Specialist promotes the development of self-directed wellness skills and natural supports beyond the behavioral health system. The Peer Specialist demonstrates and supports individuals in self-advocacy, teaches life skills, and assists individuals in planning to achieve personal recovery goals. As Abby’s supervisor, what would you do?- Create a new post with your response to "As the supervisor, I would..." (taking into account what you learned from the course faculty).
- Review at least 3 postings from others in the class.
- Respond to at least 1 posting from someone else in the class with additional thoughts about the posting.

I think all the extra tasks she performs have given Abby a sense of security, so I would be sensitive to the fact that she just loss her boss and may be using the extra work as a way of coping with feelings of insecurity. I would ask Abby if she feels like she is doing too much, and then try to understand how she ended up doing all the extra work in the first place. I agree with the course faculty that Abby is doing work that is not directly related to her job as a peer specialist and would work with Abby to see what she is doing that is outside of her job description and how to make sure that work is covered.

I have no idea whether or not this response is getting to anyone at any time. I have no idea to whom this message may be addressed, although all the responses made by the course faculty and the above response are very good. I am returning to the main menu.
